This is the debut exhibition of one of the most important gifts to the Norton Museum of Art in recent decades: the Brownstone Collection of Minimalist painting and sculpture, some 62 works assembled by Gilbert and Catherine Brownstone of Palm Beach and Paris. Artists represented in the exhibition include Josef Albers, Lucio Fontana, Gottfried Honegger, Imi Knoebel, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Allan McCollum, Olivier Mosset, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, and Ed Ruscha. Together their works visualize the various modes of Minimalism--a late expression of modernism's steady march toward formal purity--when representational subject matter and the personalized use of materials gave way to geometric design, industrial techniques, and modular arrangements. As a whole the collection reflects the intelligence, austere beauty, and international breadth of the Minimalist movement. Organized by the Norton Museum of Art.
